Together We Thrive: Embracing Humanitarianism and Women's Equality in August

As we enjoy the last moments of summer, I would like to highlight two key dates in the month of August: World Humanitarian Day on August 19th, and Women’s Equality Day on August 26th.

World Humanitarian Day asks us to recognize those who have dedicated their lives to humanitarian causes by helping communities in need across the world. Engineering is inherently a global profession, as we engineers share our ideas, insights, and achievements with each other to build a better world. Our mission at ASME—to advance engineering for the benefit of humanity—reflects this.

This August, and beyond, I encourage you to examine your work through a global lens. How can our innovations and advancements in engineering not just benefit those closest to us, but also those around the world? How can we consider others’ perspectives in order to better our work for all?

August 26th, Women’s Equality Day, is a national holiday that commemorates the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which granted women the right to vote. This was a monumental step in the fight for women’s equality.

At ASME, we are committed to celebrating the achievements of women, both in the past and the present. We are proud to partner with organizations such as the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and the Women in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN), as we support the advancement of women in the engineering profession.

Let’s continue to work together to make the world better for all.

With regards
